  • Park Avenue Community Center 129 Park Avenue Swarthmore, PA, 19081 United States (map)

Create your own Ukrainian Pysanky. This two hour beginner class gives you step by step instructions on how to make your Pysanky using beeswax and a writing tool called a kistka. Writing Pysanky is wax-resist technique and is a beautiful tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation. 15 years and up. $35

Tammy Budnovitch has been writing Pysanky since she was a young girl. Tammy, along with her brothers, would decorate eggs to be placed in the basket to be blessed for Easter. These eggs were written with a pin that was placed in an eraser of a pencil. They would dip the pin in beeswax and then drop and pull the wax on an egg to make a design. Tammy learned how to write Pysanky from her mother, Sonia, and grandmother, Olga. It is a tradition that is very important to her and wants to keep it alive by teaching others this beautiful Ukrainian art form.
