Let’s Talk About Periods

  • Park Avenue Community Center 129 Park Avenue Swarthmore, PA, 19081 United States (map)

Ages 8 - 11

Attention 4th and 5th graders! Join local mom and women's health nurse Allison Garfinkel, RN in an open ended discussion geared towards 4th and 5th grade students (with uteruses) about how to best prepare for their period. We will learn a little bit about the menstrual cycle, why periods happen, what is considered normal, how to track your period (when it comes!) and learn about the different types of products available to manage the menstrual cycle including disposable pads and tampons, reusable pads, menstrual cups and menstrual underwear.

We will have a snack, and participate in some "experiments" where we will put these products to the test and decide how effective they might be.

Each participant will be able to put together their own period kit (with new disposable options including panytliners, pads, tampons and wipes) to have on hand as well as make a relaxing lavender scented bath salt. I will have some educational materials and age appropriate period themed books available for browsing and discussion.

Allison Garfinkel is a nurse, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Swarthmore mom. Allison has helped countless breastfeeding families through her 20-year nursing career in maternal/child health. She has worked as a lactation consultant and educator since 2016 and has recently started her own private practice serving Delaware County. Allison hopes that through her offerings, families will gain the confidence, practical skills and support necessary to achieve their personal breastfeeding goals.
