Plant Collecting in Southern Africa
Southern Africa boasts one of the richest and most biodiverse flora in the world. Andrew Bunting, Vice President of Horticulture at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has been fortunate enough to travel to Southern Africa several times to search for plants in the wild. His travels have brought him to the nations of South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). This lecture will explore several regions of South Africa including the Western Cape and the Drakensberg mountains and their unique flora. Andrew will discuss the detailed process of searching for plants in the wild, why international expeditions are important for the introduction of new plants for the garden, and the role that international plant collection plays in plant conservation.
