Chess Club

Grades K-2 & 3-5

Chess has provided a fun learning experience for students of all ages and abilities. National Scholastic Chess Foundation after-school enrichment programs are tailored to accommodate students of different strengths within the same class, with students working in small groups based on age and ability.

Through structured lessons and supervised play, students improve their ability to focus, create and implement plans, and adapt their thinking when circumstances change. They learn the game's rich history, how to win and lose with grace, and to achieve goals by persevering through adversity. The NSCF is excited to bring chess as an afterschool activity to students at Park Avenue Community Center.

Level 1 classes: Beginners learn piece names, values and movements, chess rules, and how to record their games. Students then learn to select good moves, avoid common mistakes, understand pawn roles and structures, and master key tactics including pins, forks, and discovered attacks.

Level 2 classes: Students who have mastered the basics focus on evaluating positions through material, mobility, and king safety. They learn to create and sustain direct attacks on the opponent's king and study classic attacking games.
